Local SEO for Small Businesses: Your Monthly Checklist

Local SEO is not a job you do once. The businesses that turn up in local searches tend to be the ones that keep their details accurate, collect reviews steadily and add something useful to their website every month. The good news is that an hour or two a month covers most of it. Here is the routine we suggest to clients across Bedfordshire and beyond.

Week one: check your Google Business Profile

Open your profile and check the basics as if you were a new customer. Is the phone number right? Are your opening hours or service areas correct? Do the categories describe what you actually do? Google lets the public suggest edits, so details can change without you noticing. Google's tips for improving local ranking.

  • Confirm name, phone number and website address match your site exactly.
  • Add two or three recent photos of real work, not stock images.
  • Publish one update about a recent job, offer or piece of advice.
  • Answer any questions customers have left on the listing.

Week two: ask for reviews, properly

Reviews help people decide whether to trust you, and they are one of the signals Google uses to judge prominence. The simplest method is to ask every happy customer straight after the job, with a direct link to your review form. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and helpful tone.

Never buy reviews, offer rewards for them or write them yourself. Google's policies forbid it and a sudden burst of suspicious reviews can do more harm than having none.

Week three: improve one page on your website

Pick one service page and make it better. Add a real example of recent work, answer a question customers often ask, or explain which towns you cover and how you work there. One genuinely improved page each month adds up to twelve a year, which is far more useful than a batch of thin pages written in a weekend.

If you write a monthly blog post, make it answer a question a local customer would actually type into Google or ask ChatGPT. Link it to the relevant service page so visitors know where to go next.

Week four: check what is working

Open Google Search Console and look at which searches brought people to your site and which pages they landed on. Check your Google Business Profile insights for calls and direction requests. Most importantly, count real enquiries and ask new customers how they found you. Rankings are only useful if they turn into work. Google Search Console is free to set up.

Keep your details consistent everywhere

Once a quarter, check listings such as Bing Places, Yell and Apple Business Connect. Your business name, phone number and website should read the same everywhere. Inconsistent details confuse customers and make it harder for search tools to be sure they have the right business.
